Heads up play in SNGs when you are the short stack....

Postby kdiddy33 » Tue Aug 09, 2005 7:06 am

One of the things I've learned in heads up play is to not go all in without a part of the board. Seems simple enough, but I've seen players go all in with big overcards and lose to my top pair (or sometimes middle pair). This usually happens when they are the short stack, so I can risk the call.

That brings me to a slightly different point. I am the short stack and I pick up an OE straight draw or a non-nut flush draw on the flop. Say there are $13,500 in chips total (9 handed SNG on FT), and you have $1200-$2000 left. You bet the minimum hoping to see the turn/river cheaply and get put all in. Do you:

a: call and hope to double up even though you are a 3-1 dog and only getting 2-1 for your money?

b: fold it up and hope you get another shot, even though you only have 3-4 BBs left.

I can tell you that I find myself taking option A more often than B.

What do you think? Is this a leak in my game, or am I just taking a knowledgeable gamble in a tough situation.

Thanks

I don't agree with the minimum bet on the turn part. Before you throw in that bet you should decide if you want to take that hand to the river. When you're short-stacked you cannot throw out these bets and then not follow through with them. You have to pick a hand and push.

With the blinds as high as they are this late in the game and you're short-stacked you only have four or five chances to push before you're blinded away. If you pick up the nut-flush draw or OE straight draw, then push it. It's likely to be the best situation you can find within four or five hands. Calling would be worse since it has no folding equity.

Thanks. I'm beginning to agree that this should be an insta push because:

1) I got my chips in the middle with good odds

2) He could fold, since I'm the aggressor

3) Any other bet or check looks pathetic

4) I'm pretty much screwed at this point anyways.
