Level 1: AKo against 10x BB raise

Postby EscapePlan9 » Fri Nov 11, 2005 12:37 pm

The very first hand, I pick up AKo in MP. Some loony raises 10x BB from EP.

This happened on PP, so losing 150 chips is quite a chip burner.

Lay it down. The pros call this hand the Anna Kournikova - it looks great but never wins.

EP, I gotta agree with Sunbob here, I fold that like a tent from the get-go.

You're telling me that AK in MP in the first hand of a tournament is the best opportunity you're going to have? I don't think so. I see no reason to call that preflop raise.

Not the best opportunity, of course not! Let's say the PFR raised 3-4x the BB, then it'd be easily playable, right? Or are you suggesting early on I should never play AK against a raise?

I would play it against a smaller raise, but not 10BB. With AK I want to be the raiser, if someone else raises I'm much more cautious. I think your opponent had a higher PP, and was hoping you hit the J. Most of the time AJ/KJ/QJ will fold to your raise on the flop.

I put him on QQ or JJ. Actually at the $5 & $10 SnGs at UB that is a fairly common play in the first hand. And just like your hand - a 10xBB raise usually gets called. He really could have been a fish but he may just have been a player who likes to make a fast start and "make a name for himself" on this table. Some of them ARE fish but some are just TAGs setting the tone.

How long did he last?

True, he could have just been making a huge raise early on with big pairs, but his flop action was certainly awkward. It's almost like he was doing a weak lead into me as if I were the pre-flop raiser.

I wouldn't fold that because if you hit your A or K you're most likely going to get his stack, knowing the fishes on Party. So call and if you miss, don't even try and bluff at the pot, just fold it. 650 chips is still enough to make the money a lot of the time at party.
Poker is silly.

It is not enough to be good at chess, you must also play well.

Somewhere in the world someone is training when you are not. When you race him, he will win.

I think I would put him on a big pocket pair, in order to understand a fish you must think like a fish

I have KK, alright last time I got sucked out on when someone flopped an A so I am going to raise a crazy amount/ or he is counting on people being crazy in the first hand (which is not that crazy).

After the flop he bets 50 because he doesn't want to chase you away.

then you raise and he calls, then he figured you were "pot commited" so he pushed all in to get a call.
