Overcards vs PP...whats your line?

Postby thotte » Wed Jan 25, 2006 2:16 am

I recently started playing 5+.5 SNGs and have had great success so far (only off the money once in 16 SNGs, but i dont expect that to last much longer). In a hand from yesterday the following happened

50/100 blinds

Me 3300 [KQo]
Bigstack 7900
Villain 3800

Villain calls, i raise 400, Bigstack folds, Villain raise allin.

My read on him was a PP lower than Queens. What line should i take here? If i lose i finish 3:rd and collect $10. If i call his allin and win i will be headsup with Mr Bigstack who i am fairly sure i can beat and even if i lose headsup i collect $15. On the other hand blinds are relatively low and i dont have to panic, usually i rather be the pusher than the caller.

If my read is correct i am about 45/55 underdog. In the heat of the battle i did a quick calculation off my head, something like

EV-win = 0.45*$15 = $6.75
EV-lose = 0.55*$10 = $5.5

so i called...

Was that a correct push or should i wait for a better situation, if so, what is a better situation?
Is that a correct way to calc EV when in the money?

You pushed... or you called an all-in? I wouldn't call an all-in with K-high given those stacks. If he has A-high you're either dominated (win ~30%) or behind (win ~35-40%), and if he has a lower pocket pair, you'll only win 45% of the time. The blinds are really small compared to stacks at the moment, so I'd wait a bit more.

Always remember: it takes a stronger hand to call an all-in than to push all-in.

Poker is silly.

It is not enough to be good at chess, you must also play well.

Somewhere in the world someone is training when you are not. When you race him, he will win.

Very easy fold. I like the raise but when he oushes you need to dump it quickly. Even if your read is right you're behind and with only 10% invested and a pretty decent stack, I am NOT hoping to be in on the wrong side of a coinflip for all my money.

Thank you for the replies, this forum is great ;)

Point taken...why risk it when i am the underdog, especially given the stack sizes and blinds. I have obviously been running hot since i started my SNG-project so i tried this as a way to improve my no1 finishes (got a bit eager).

By the way, villain flipped over TT so at least my reads are improving
