Overplayed my huge stack in a $33 heads up

Postby kdiddy33 » Sun Oct 09, 2005 5:46 pm

So, I have been crushing this game and I'm up $10,500 in chips to $3000 on a guy who is fairly solid.

I get A 8 os in the BB. He limps and I raise it all in, he has A K and takes it down. Now I have him out-chipped but its pretty tight.

Next hand, I have 22 in the SB, I am a little too cocky at this point and push it all in preflop. He calls and has 33!!!!

Not surprisingly, his 33 holds up and now I'm crushed. Next hand we're all in, as I really have no choice in the matter. I'm done.

Obviously, I overplayed my 22. This is a major weakness in my game, as HU in this position, I should have played these a little softer. Why play for the coin flip? It was stupid, maybe I was on semi-tilt, I don't know what. This time it cost me $50 in winnings, even though I won $81. What do you guys think???

PS, the roll just hit $2K for 2005, pretty happy with that!

How big were the blinds? If they were 200/400 or 300/600 or something then I don't mind the first all in with A8, it's a monster heads up and there's no point trying to get tricky and trap with it if the blinds are so huge. Stealing his blind would do hefty damage to his stack if he folds and most hands he would call with (Ax with x lower than 8, Kx, Qx, Scs, PPs) you have a good chance to win against.

With 22 I think you definitely overplayed too much. You're basically putting the tournament on the line as a 60/40 dog for what, one big blind? I don't like getting involved much with 2s as you dominate almost zero hands preflop.

Again though, it depends on what the blinds were. If they were still say 100/200 then you have plenty of room and time to play lots of small pots and outplay him. Massive blinds means a lot more luck is involved and you were just unlucky enough to get all in twice and be dominated both times.

Congrats on getting the roll to $2k. Very nice effort :) I'm approaching that milestone myself, hope to be there by the end of this week.
Poker is silly.

It is not enough to be good at chess, you must also play well.

Somewhere in the world someone is training when you are not. When you race him, he will win.
