Pstars $10+1 blinds 5-6th level, 6+ opponents passive table?

Postby shoesnatcher » Mon Dec 12, 2005 9:43 pm

Long time lurker, I have decided to begin playing $10+1 at Poker Stars. The past several SNG's I have played have been chalked full of loose/passive or weak/passive players. As a result I am seeing 6+ opponents at blind levels 5 (50/100) and 6 (75/150). I am trying hard to play the Nash Vegas strategy but I find by the time I get to these blind levels I still have several opponents left but I find my self with 1000-1300 in chips with most all of my opponents having an equal number of chips (no short stacks). Here's my question:
how do I deal with the situation when I really need to start accumulating chips when 3-4 oppoents routinely limp in front of me? I understand a good part of blind stealing success is to be the first in the pot with a raise. The more contested the pot the harder it will be to steal. The way I have been handling it is to wait for uncontested pots and attempt steals. There are so few uncontested pots, I normally wind up pushing all in by the time the blinds hit 50-100 or 75-150 with the top 20% of hands (this is because I am down 1000 chips or fewer and I figure my chances of finishing ITM are slim unless I double up). So basically my tournament life has been revolving around winnng coin flips (I normally have the bet hand when I go in and wind up losing). Am I missing something here? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Since they are limping so frequently, they most likely are playing plenty of weak hands. That also means they aren't likely to call your all-in, so you can steal the blinds plus the limpers money. I'm not saying push with any two cards in these situations (not a terrible play after a bunch of limpers, but it's too risky for my liking), but if you would have open-pushed with a decent hand, like AT+ or 77+, just raise all-in here.

Nash's strategy also is mostly for PartyPoker SNGs which are drastically different from PokerStars ones. You only start with 800 chips at PartyPoker, the players there are crazier, and the blinds increase more rapidly. Nash's strat is excellent there. With other sites, you have to play a bit more poker.

I have been playing both the PP and PS 10+1 sng and yes the players at PS are definately more passive. Just for kicks sometimes make a raise of 3-4xbb behind the limpers and watch them fold. If you don't feel comfotable doing this with any two cards just wait until you have a decent hand then fire away. I like the aspect of playing a little post flop poker on the PS SNG's but they do take ALOT longer to play. Even post flop you can push them out of the pot with a decent bet most of the time. The only guy who will stay is the one who might have you beat. On PP people will stay all the way with nothing sometimes which is absolutly crazy. When you get down to 5-6 players start fireing away whith any reasonable hand and steal steal steal. If you get re raised and don't have a hand muck'em cause they will have a hand most of the time unless it is me :P :P
