NL Raising For Free Card? Spewing?

Postby EscapePlan9 » Thu Jun 01, 2006 8:45 pm

I've done this a few times lately and wonder what you guys think of it.

Let's say it's early in the tournament, I'm on the CO with QJs and there's 3 limpers before me. I limp as well, SB limps, BB checks.

Flop comes T53 with two of my suit. There's a few checks, a small bet (often less than half-pot) and a fold to me. I raise a decent amount to close to pot size.

Here's why I like doing this:

The small bet could be a weak middling pair and will fold to my raise.
Not many people will RR my RR here without a monster.
I have overcards with my flush draw.
Most of the time the turn will be checked to me after this.
If I hit my flush they aren't as likely to put me on it.

I wouldn't do this if someone bets more than half-pot. Only against the small bets that happen somewhat often in early levels.

So far the most often occuring result is everyone folds and I take down the pot. Other times I get one caller or two at most, and they check the turn.

Looks good to me, it's a fairly standard move and it'll work almost everytime.
Poker is silly.

It is not enough to be good at chess, you must also play well.

Somewhere in the world someone is training when you are not. When you race him, he will win.

Good point. Perhaps I could have renamed the post to "NL Semi-Bluffing in Position". When you semi-bluff out of position, you obviously have little chance of gaining the "free card" benefit.

Use it often as well but I would not want more then two players in the pot. The scenario here is just too many players live. With this many players i would just minireraise ( or flat call ) here and see if no one was slowplaying his trips. If I am heads up i can still use my position and get a free card on river.
I think you get the same effect for lesser chips at risk.

Also if you have to show your cards I would not make that move again and make sure you are not playing with regulars who have seen you do it.
