SNG Hand from last night for analysis:

Postby kdiddy33 » Wed Aug 17, 2005 9:12 am

I managed to have a complete big stack melt-down last night in an $11 SNG on Full Tilt. I had about $5000 in chips with 5 players left. Now in the past, I've been pretty tight in these situations, picking my spots to step in, etc. I felt I was doing that again in this hand. Here is the situation:

Blinds are 100/200 and I'm in the SB. MP raises it to 600, which is a standard raise, and is tough to put on some kind of a hand. This guy has been becoming more loose, and played some marginal stuff early. I have:

K J (spades)

I call the bet and the BB folds. Flop is:

K (diamond) 2 (club) 10 (diamond)

I'm first to act and bet the pot (which is 1400). He goes over the top, putting me all in. There's obviously a range of hands he could have here, AK, trip 10s, diamond flush draw that he's overbetting, etc. I've seen people at the $11s even push with A 10 in this kind of a situation. I think about it and call the all-in, risking my tournament life, but if I win, I have the table pretty much crippled.

He turns over pocket 2s and had hit his set, which holds up.

Given what happened, obviously I played this hand wrong, or did I? Please tell me what you think. Did I lower my starting hand requirements too much given my stack size?

I think I would have avoided the big stack by folding preflop. You and the big stack had most of the chips(all but 3000 or so?). If the big stack was loose as you say there would be time to bust him later on a more premium hand or crush him heads up & in the mean time you could push around the other small stacks that were on the brink of defeat.

I got caught up in the heat of the excitement I guess.
