Weak/tight players

Postby Cactus Jack » Tue Sep 13, 2005 11:05 am

I'm watching a $5 SNG on Full Tilt. The blinds are now at $50/$100. There are 8 of 9 players left. One player has $390, and one has $3200. Everyone else has between $1000 and $2000 chips.

I guess I gave away my opinion of these guys in the subject line, but what would you think if you saw this?

nope. just watching. I've not played any SNGs on FT, so by watching I can get a feel for how the players play. I've found every site has a "style" which all players seem to adopt. The players on Party, now, I believe, are very weak/tight. Only played a couple now on Full Tilt, but it looks pretty much the same. The players are better on PokerStars, tight, but maybe not quite as weak, as many will jump on better hands and play position a bit more. All at the same stakes.

You can learn a lot by watching. Try to put all the players on hands. That can drive ya nuts. :)

Last night on Full Tilt, I played both SNGs and ring games. I was struck by the difference. The ring games were crazy loose/aggressive. Dunno if a lot of the players were drunk on their asses, but it sure seemed like it. The SNGs were incredibly tight passive. Blinds of $150/$300 and $200/$400 were common with 7 of 9 left. Wading through those kinds of packs with high blinds is an effort.

How do you play 'em?

What makes me crazy about these things are the constant 1xBB bets and 1xBB raises, and then three people call to the river.

I used to see this all the time at Absolute, and it drove me away from that site even though I had pretty good ROIs there. But it would make me crazy.

Blinds 30/60. Three people call the blind. MP raises 60 to 120. Button, blinds, early limpers all call, so now you have a pot of what, around 1,000? Flop comes, two or three check, one guy bets 60, a few call, a couple fold. Turn comes, guy bets 60, everyone folds except one guy, who raises to 120. Call. Come the river, guy checks, button bets 60, other guy folds.

Damn things would take 90 minutes because all these people would do would pass chips around the table.

FTP S&G's are too easy at the low levels. Just play like Harrington recommends, or maybe just a tad more loose / aggressive.

They all want to fold. Make them fold and take their chips. Then, when they finally get sick of folding, you pick up a hand and take the rest of their chips.

There are a small handful who play aggressively, but they're on the far other end of the spectrum. Easy to take them down too.

Thanks for comments, I see what you mean now but this aint what I see playing at low stakes FTP sng
CJ what you describe are extreme cases, does occur but not often.
Flatfishy what you describe simply does not happen a 1000 pot with 60bb dont go unraised or raised at min bet.
I agree with bigphish that there is a certain willingness to fold and can be exploited, I also found that Harrington's style but a bit looser is what works best.
