What do you do when you have a nasty SNG streak?

Postby poker2006 » Tue Aug 30, 2005 2:43 am

I think I lost about 10 SNGs in a row at Party and Bodog, mostly 20+2. Do you guys have any advice on what to do? Don't play for a few days? Play the lowest limit ones until I get back winning? I'm normally a winning SNG player at these buyins, and I don't remember having a bad streak like this one...

It's really frustrating, I try to play tight and get to level 3 or so with a shorter stack. I see LAG players raising left and right with junk, some min-raise 25-30% of hands after getting a larger stack. Then I get an AK or some reasonable hand, reraise preflop and lose the damn coinflip. Over and over again. I reraise with a small PP and lose the coinflip. I reraise with a high PP and I get outdrawn.

Last 2 SNGs I tried to really not force it and see flops, make value bets. A LAG player min raises, I call with AQo in BB. Flop is AAx, I bet small, he raises, call. I value bet the turn he calls. He hits his A8o kicker on the river and gets me.....

Had to vent my frustration. Your advice is appreciated.

Taking a break is the best thing to do but I also find it the hardest thing to do.

You have to find a method for yourself where when you sit down at your next sit and go you act like it is the first one.
Your mind needs to be clear of all the beats and outdrawns because else you will start to play like your opponents and your game goes down.

Find out what space of time you need to clear your mind and make a fresh start.

I am in one of my worst periods ever but that mainly has to do with one very drunk night where I was able to find the on switch of my computer.

If you are a winning player and lets say make 25 ROI%.and you play $22 stngs think of every tourney where you sit down as an about $6 profit.
So every time a tourney starts what ever the outcome is you made $6. You can lose 10 in a row but if you play your main game you have actually made $60.

But you have to play your A-game and if you get outdrawn with the best hand...no problem. Be honest to yourself and rerun your games played.
What I have found out in the past is that I got a little gamble like and would push with every coinflip I got and you will loose enough times to not get in the money so try to avoid them when you have a choice.

Hope it is of some help.

You gave yourself a tip

With this hand... you are pretty much got setup and sucked in i cant see folding here .. u just got outdrawn cant do much there...

___

One tip i have is that sometimes bad beats... tend to destroy your confidence making you not bet some of ur better hands and getting outdrawn and losing your stack.

What i have a log sheet... and i write comments on each loss i take... im true to myself and i comment if its a bad play, just unlucky, outdrawn , or whatever the reason i loss is... befoer i make that decision i always look at my situation and see if i had another option... if i did i automatically consider it a bad play...

On Friday, I lost 5 straight SNGs. Throw in an MTT and I wasn't very happy. Said, why not make this an even half-dozen and call it a day. Same thing happening to me. Couldn't get much decent to play and missed every flop, again. Down to 570 chips, but the blinds were now up to 50/100. Pushed UTG and took the blinds. Raised from the BB and took one limper and the SB. Pushed in the CO and now I'm in fairly decent shape, without showing a hand. Good thing, because I had crap. Went on the win it, when some decent cards finally came with the card bus.

I felt pretty good about this. I took this tourney with the right plays at the right times against the right opponents. This was the first time I actually felt like I was playing really well, and saw I could win without having the best cards. It was a nice feeling, and my help during those times when I wonder if I'm ever going to win again.

Hope this helps.
